Flowers were not a subject matter that I expected to paint, as you can see from my gallery I am a portrait painter first and foremost. However, as spring and summer brought life to our garden and we got our first ever clematis flower I was inspired to paint it, just for my own enjoyment and to make a change from skin and fur!
As more flowers appeared it seemed only fair to paint them too. So without really intending to I ended up working on a series of flower paintings.
With that in mind a recent flower festival (aka open gardens) in a local village seemed too good an opportunity to miss. Partly for snooping around some amazing gardens (I’m only a little bit jealous!) but mostly for getting photos of some beautiful flowers to use in my paintings. It was a really bright sunny day which is exactly the look I am going for.
And then out of nowhere this poppy appeared in my front garden!! I’m not sure how long it was there before I noticed it and I don’t remember planing it but it is very welcome to stay! I’ll definitely be painting this in the near future…
